Karima Bennoune: The heros which challenge fundamentalism

These days it seems impossible to avoid listening to news related to the islamist movement. Unfortunately, most of these news are about events we would prefer not to know. But this is the time we are living in and after a long internal discussion we decided to dedicate this month’s event to this subject. However, in contrast to the news, we will present you positive examples which usually do not appear in the news: people fighting for a good cause, many of them living in danger and fearing death.

The talk
We will screened a TED talk (english video with spanish subtitles) of Karima Bennoune. In her talk Karima shares four powerful stories of real people fighting against fundamentalism in their own communities — refusing to allow the faith they love to become a tool for crime, attacks and murder. These personal stories humanize one of the most overlooked human-rights struggles in the world.
The discussion
After watching the talk together we discussed about fundamentalism, religion, extremism and terrorism. Each and everyone of you asked questions and expressed opinions thus contributing to our always interesting discussion.
Networking
As always, after the discussion we had the possibility to do networking enjoying drinks and tapas for everyone. (included in the entrance fee)
Your ideas and questions
Since we are discussing a very broad subject about which many of you already have ideas in mind, this time we gave you the opportunity to propose ideas and questions beforehand. (People registered received an email with the link to propose ideas/questions). These ideas were visible on our web and you could vote in favour or against them. At the event we guided the discussion around the most voted ideas/questions.
